Shree Jagannath temple is dedicated to the Hindu God Jagannath Swami. It is famous for hosting the annual chariot-rath yatra which is the third largest and most important Rath Yatra in Puri, after the Rath Yatra. Jagannath Temple Timings: From 06:00 AM to 09 00 PM.
Jagannath Temple
It is located in Ahmedabad, India's state of Gujarat. Sadhu Sarangadasji established this temple over 450 years ago.
The annual Rath Yatra in Puri is very similar to the Puri Rath Yatra. Tradition says that the procession begins with Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra, and his sister Subhadra.
What is the history of the Shree Jagannath temple?
The area in which the temple is located was once a dense forest that ran along the Sabarmati River in the east about 460 years ago. Saints often seek out quiet places along rivers, away from the bustle and noise of cities.
Sadhu Sri Hanuman, JI, was one such traveler who visited Ahmedabad and found this area to be suitable for his stay.
Rama, a devotee Maruti's deity, placed an idol of Maruti here. This idol is still revered to this day.
Some miracles that he witnessed during his stay attracted people from the nearby area and the foundation for the establishment of a small temple. Sadhu Sri Sarangdas JI Jagannath was his successor.
He wanted to visit the Jagannath Temple, Puri, Orissa. Along with him, a few local companions also participated in the pilgrimage.
While resting in the Dharamshala at the Puri temple's Puri temple, he received philosophical instructions from Jagannath. He was to return to Ahmedabad to erect idols representing the Holy Trinity: Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra, and Subhadra. The Maruti Temple was thus made the shrine of Sri Jagannath ji.
Architecture and Construction
According to the temple, it was built in the Anangabhima Deva period (also known as Anangabhima III of the Ganga Dynasty).
According to Puri temple history, Anangabhimu proposed building the temple at 100 feet high, by Srivatsakhandasala's architectural style.
It is believed, however, that the height was reduced to 90 feet by the royal priests. Today, we can see the impressive structure it built at that time.
Temple Structure:
4 structures make up the main temple:
- Vimana/Badeula Sanctum Sanctorum had constructed on a Pancha Ratha, five parts or parts in a linear order.
- Each of the five pagas has its own name: Raha (one in middle), Anuradha (2 adjacent pagas), or Kanika (2 corners).
- Jagmohan and Mukhashala are both (porch),
- Natamandir, (audience room),
- Bhogamandapam - Hall for remains
They were built in an axial orientation facing east-west. Only three vowels with intricately carved vowels can be seen from the main temple. It is underground.
The Puri temple structure shows the entire Odisha Temple with four vertical sections: the pita, the bada, and the Gandi (trunk), as well as the mastaka (head).
Each structure also has a unique name that identifies its purpose, function, or program. The temple is stunning when all the structures are combined. These structures are the most important within the temple.
The temple's outer walls are decorated with symbolic sculptures that have some meaning. Understanding the significance of the temple's architecture requires knowledge about Indian temple structures constructed in different dynastic periods. Each dynasty follows its design.
It is difficult to comprehend the architecture of Jagannath Temple. However, the stunning view of the temple tells us enough about the incredible craftsmanship of ancient India.
Rath Yatra
The annual Rath Yatra in Puri is very similar to the Puri Rath Yatra. Tradition says that the procession begins with Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra, and his sister Subhadra.
After the purification of Jagannath's Chariot by the Chief Minister of Gujarat, or the symbolic Ritual' for the Chariot, the procession will commence.
For a distance of approximately 14 km, the Rath Yatra entourage travels through different parts of Ahmedabad.
The Yatra ends at Saraspur where the locals offer Maha Bhoj to all the devotees of Jagannath.
It was celebrated as the 'Lokotsav,' the public festival in Gujarat. After being celebrated on the same date, Ahmedabad Rath Yatra is the third largest Rath Yatra.
Attack on Jagannath Temple
Edit September 18, 1969: A Muslim crowd attended the local Urs festival to commemorate the burial of a Sufi saint (Bukhari Sheb's Chilla), in Jamalpur.
Some Muslim women were hurt when the saints (Hindu holymenholy men) from the Jagannath Temple attempted to transport their cows to the temple premises via the crowded streets.
According to the report, some Muslim merchants had also been destroyed by the cows. This led to violence with some Muslim youths attacking saints and smashing the windows of temples.
Sevadasji was the mahant (priest), of the Hindu temple. After a 15-member Muslim delegation, led by A.M., he called off the protest.
Peerzada apologized to him. Several Hindus vandalized the dargah (tomb), located near the temple. The area was populated by large numbers of Muslim protesters.
A mob of 2500-3000 Muslims attacked again the temple on September 19. Rumors began to spread and violence escalated. This led to numerous arsons, murders, and attacks on worship places in the surrounding area.
