Compared to other regions of Telugu, Telangana has a unique culture and is a separate state distinct from the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh. Telangana celebrations are characterized by well-defined rituals, myths and rituals and are marked by colors. Telangana celebrations give uniform and equal enthusiasm to the celebrations as they include people of all religions and castes. Two features that distinguish the state are the exceptional reverence for female deities and the universality of the ceremonies.



1. Bathukamma Festival :

Bathukamma festival is a vibrant flower festival which is one of the most famous festivals of Telangana and is celebrated before the onset of winter during the half monsoon season. It is a nine-day celebration beginning with Engili Pula Bathukamma on Mahalaya Amavasya and ending with Saddula Bathukamma on Durgastami. During these nine days, Bathukamma is beautifully decorated with different types of flowers arranged in cone shape on large plates and different meals (nivedya) are served. Children and women dressed in traditional costumes mark the Bathukamma in the center and clap their hands around and sing. Finally Bathukamma was immersed in water. The motive behind this celebration is that the flowers clean the lakes and rivers naturally.

Main attraction : Young girls and women sing beautiful songs and dance around the Bathukamma arrangement.

2. Bonal Festival :

Twin Cities of Telangana Region: Bonalu is one of the festivals celebrated in the Telugu month of Aashada (July or August) along with Secunderabad and Hyderabad along with other parts of Telangana. On this day women cook bonams (brass pots) filled with jaggery, milk and cooked rice. Special pujas are also performed to honor Goddess Mahankali. This pot is decorated using neem leaves, turmeric and saffron. They put it on their heads and offer it to Amma in gratitude.

On the first Sunday, the Bonala festivities begin with Golconda Fort. On the second day, at Ujjain Mahankali Temple in Secunderabad and Balkampet Ellamma Temple in Balkampet. During the Telugu month of Ashadam, the third Sunday takes place at the Katta and Pochamma temples and the Mateshwari temple in the old city's Lal Darwaja. Other temples like the Akkana Madanna Temple in Haribouli and the Mutyalamma Temple in Shah Ali Banda are famous for Bonas. Many devotees visit temples to worship Goddess Mahankali.

Main attraction : Women make Bonam and offer it to Goddess by hanging it on their head. Poturaju, Rangam, Ghatam.

3. Dussehra (Navratri) :

Dussehra (Dasara), also known as Navratri, is an important Hindu festival celebrated in Telangana and across India. The festival lasts for ten consecutive days and each day is dedicated to a personal incarnation of the Goddess such as Bala Tripura Sundari, Gayatri, Annapurna, Kamakshi, Lalita, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Durga and Raja Rajeshwari. 8th day is called Durgashtami. Mahanavami marks the ninth day of Navratri Adyupuja, during which people apologize to all the instruments in their lives. On Vijayadashami, the 10th day of Dussehra, Amma wears the form of Durga. On the day of Dussehra, the idol of the demon king Ravana is set off with firecrackers to celebrate the victory of good over evil.

Main attraction: Amma dressing up in different avatars for nine days. Then, on the tenth day, she takes the form of Goddess Durga.

4. Ganesh Chaturthi :

While Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with tremendous fervour throughout India, Telangana's version of the festival is particularly charming. Lord Ganesha celebrates his birthday on this day. With great devotion, Lord Ganesha and his followers do pooja utilizing a variety of flowers and foliage. Throughout the state, there are a lot of pandals devoted to idols that are immersed in water on the third, fifth, or ninth day. 7. Diwali:

Telangana celebrates Diwali, which stands for the triumph of good over evil, with considerable fanfare. 8. Ugadi :

There is an Ugadi (also known as Yugadi festival in Telangana), celebrated as one of the Telugu New Year according to the Hindu Lunar Calendar. 9. Ramzan:

Ramzan can be celebrated with great enthusiasm in Telangana. The celebration is based on the Islamic calendar, which is based on the visibility of the moon. Muslims fast from dawn to sunset and neither eat nor drink water. An alternative is that Muslims eat breakfast in the early morning known as Suhur. 10. Festival of Peers:


In Telangana, Muharram is referred to as the festival of Peers and is significant to Muslims. People participate in a march during the celebration, representing the complete collection—which includes Sufi shrines—while singing Yahussain. For Muslims who are grieving the loss of Imam Hussain, the Pirla celebration is tragic.

A must-see attraction: Muslims offer up prayers in groups for forgiveness.

11. Medaram Fair :

Medaram Jatara is the biggest traditional festival of Telangana tribals and is also known as Sammakka Saralamma Jatara. This festival is celebrated at least once every 2 years in the town of Medaram and is dedicated to the deity mother and daughter Saralamma and Sammakka who died in a fierce battle. In the evening, Samayana will take Goddess Saralamma from Kanneboinapalle village. Then people carry Sammakka deity from Chilukalagutta. Estimates suggest that around 1.3 million people will attend the fair, second only to the Kumbh Mela.

12. Pedgattu Fair :

The Pedgattu Jatara is the second largest religious event in Telangana and is held every year for two consecutive years. This is a fair held in the name of Goddess Chaudamma along with Lingamanti, the deities of the day. During the five-day celebration, different poojas are performed to the deities, as people believe that they are incarnations of Lord Shiva and his consort Chaudamma. 10 to 15 thousand devotees will attend the Jatara Jatara.

13. Seven-footed fair:

Nagsanpally is a small locality in Medak district that comes alive with the Idupulapayajatara festival held every year in the month of Shivratri. The name refers to the confluence of seven rivers in the Manjirari River. Over the decades the area has gained religious significance. People from all over Telangana come to the shrine to expiate their past sins and pay obeisance to the deities and attract around five lakh people to the shrine. It is customary to sacrifice sheep and chickens to bless the goddess and fulfill their wishes. Most of the devotees spend a night at this place so the experience of the fair is more special.

   Main attraction: Shops and stalls offering a wide variety of goods.

14. Kurumurthy Swami Jatara:

Kurumurthy Swamy Jatara is celebrated by the citizens of Telangana in November and lasts for seven days. It is the oldest temple in Telangana, Sri Kurumurthy Swamy Temple is believed to be Tirupati for the poor. Thousands of devotees visit the fair to pray and have a glimpse of Lord Vishnu. Sri Vari Uddava Seva is considered to be the main event of the Brahmotsavam celebrations, during which thousands of devotees present the Padukas of Swami to Kurumurthy Swami in a procession.

15. Komuravelli Mallanna Jatara :

Komuravelli Mallikarjuna Swami Jatara is held by the same name in Komuravelli village of Siddipet district. Devotees pray to Lord Shiva during the fair and perform ceremonies during the month of Mahashivratri. Another attraction that takes place in this mela is the creation of unique rangoli on the balcony of the temple by the members of the Og Pujari group. At least 10000 people will attend the fair across Telangana.

Main attraction : Special rangoli in front of temple balcony Oggukatha (Patnam) .

Place: Komuravelli, Siddipet District.

16. Chittaramma Jatara :

Chittarammajatara is held in the temple with the same name. It is located in the Gajularamaram community of Hyderabad and is considered one of the most popular celebrations in the state. It is celebrated in Pushya month according to Telugu calendar. Chittaaramma of Gajularamaram village is known as village deity or local deity. It is estimated that more than three thousand devotees from across the state will flock to the temple.

Important attraction: Huge crowds praying to the deity.

17. Sadr Festival :

The Yadav community of Hyderabad is known to celebrate their Sadar celebrations in Telangana with great enthusiasm. It is celebrated on the first day of Diwali and is also known as the festival of ploughmen. The buffalo owners were surprised to see this ceremony. The sturdiest buffalo is paraded before the gifting, which is selected on the advice of the Yadav family. In the following, all the buffaloes are beautifully decorated and paraded through the streets of Hyderabad chanting Wah Wa Yadav.
