First woman Chief Justice of Delhi High Court in India

Born in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, Ms. Gorla Rohini was unknown to the world until she became the first woman Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. At that time education was available only to women in India. She graduated from Osmania University with a First Class Degree in Law. Women were supposed to stay in their homes. She overcame those obstacles and completed her high school and earned a law degree.

After facing many challenges, she completed her degree at the age of 21. In 1980, she enrolled as an advocate and joined Mr. Koka Rao, an Advocate and Chairman of Andhra Pradesh State Bar Council. From the beginning she was determined to grow in her career. She started as a reporter for Andhra Pradesh Law Journals founded by Shri Koka Raghava Raho.

She is a lawyer in Andhra Pradesh. She has also represented herself in tribunals and civil court cases. A woman actively involved in cases of female infanticide and cases related to working women. This is a common practice in many parts of India. In a country where women are denied the right to work outside, she aims for better career growth. In medieval times women were forbidden to speak to anyone outside of their own culture or circumstances. As a lawyer, she has to deal with many men at work and handle cases involving criminals, which not all parents allow.

After being appointed as a government pleader in the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 1995, she served until she was elected to the bench. She was appointed as a Government Pleader and attended cases in Food and Civil Supplies, Science and Technology, Environment, Irrigation, Consumer Affairs, Command Area Development, Finance and Planning, Employment and Training, Energy Labor and many other departments of Government. She was appointed to the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 2000 and became a permanent judge in 2002. The Delhi High Court was the first woman to be elected as the Chief Justice of India. Although women have the same rights and education as men, they are not allowed to hold high positions in India. She overcame those limitations and became the first woman Chief Justice of India.
