Biography of Lord Meghnad Desai


Born in 1940 in Vadodara state, Lord Meghnad Desai is an economist. He is a naturalized British citizen. Also, he is a British parliamentarian and a participant in the House of Lords. He was elected to the House of Lords in 2011. He was a candidate for the post of Speaker of the House of Lords, but his campaign was unsuccessful. It is a well-known fact that Lord Desai was never a candidate for this post and was a non-British citizen of any country.


His career tracker is an amazing curve. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1963. He taught at the London School of Economics. Later the London School of Economics established two key institutes, including the Center for the Study of Global Governance and the Institute of Development Studies in 1990 and 1992 respectively. Lord Desai is now Emeritus Professor of Economics at the LSE.






After withdrawing from the London School of Economics in 2003, Lord Desai has published several books proving his mettle in many fields. A glance at his published books proves that he is a prolific writer. For example, Rethinking Islamism: Ideology of the New Terror (2006), The Root to All Evil the Political Economy of Ezra Pound (2007), Dead on Time, (2009) and The Rediscovery of Indians (2009) . His interests are diverse and range from Marxism and literature to fiction and cinema and cinema studies. Along with traveling, he also enjoys cooking and reading. Additionally, he is also a regular columnist for several top journals including The Business Standard, The Indian Express and The Financial Express.


In India, he recently established the Meghnad Desai Academy of Economics because he felt that there was a huge gap between the theoretical concepts taught to economics students and their practical application in real-life business/corporate/industrial economic situations. In this way, the goal is to create an elite group of economists who are workplace-ready when they leave university and start looking for work. This institution was created exclusively for students in the graduate program.


Lord (Meghnad) Desai is the Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum (OMFIF), a financial institution.


Lord Desai's life story is a fascinating read and most inspiring. His life is an example that no dream is too big to achieve and no goal can be ignored or overlooked. Being a naturalized British citizen did not prevent him from running for election to the House of Lords, although he was unsuccessful.


Plus, his many activities and interests show his endless enthusiasm for life, and you're never too young or too old to study. Lord Desai was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2008. In 2015, Lord Desai was awarded the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Vishwapratibha Award by Vishwa Gujarat Samaj.


The award recognizes his contribution to Gujarati society in general. These awards prove that one is never too old to master new things or discover new and innovative businesses that can help make one's life worthwhile long after the end of life.
